Nature Hikes at Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge

Although the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge isn’t scheduled to open to visitors until sometime in 2018, it is possible right now to take guided hikes of the 5,237-acre refuge.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which manages the refuge, bases its operations on the 2005 “Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan.” That plan calls for extensive community involvement with the refuge. Long-term plans call for a variety of wildlife-focused visitor activities and opportunities, once federal funds are appropriated and facilities, like trails and signage, are built.

Until then, the refuge is available on a limited basis by reservation for nature hikes. The next two hikes are on September 22, and October 20, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. These hikes will explore the wide variety of plants, birds and other wildlife in the refuge.

Be prepared to hike three miles. You can reserve a spot by calling the refuge at (303) 289-0930. Space is limited.

Information about the refuge can be found on the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge web site.
